To SUV or not to SUV...

GOT TOXIC LOADING?
How many
cars will you own over a lifetime: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
8, 9, 10 or more? (8 - 10 is the US average) At what cost? Personnally, Socially,
Environmentally? Mere average auto costs over a lifetime may
exceed $500,000, not including the high costs of environmental
health concerns, or the costs to maintain military services in
far-flung places to protect corporate petrolium interests.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Adminisraion and the
Insurance Institute recently reported that SUVs continue to be
a rollover risk (as much as 30 percent more likely to rollover
in single vehicles accidents), and continue to statistically
result in more dealths than accidents involving non-SUV vehicles.
This may not be surprizing. It has been suggested that drivers
of SUVs may feel safer even though typical SUVs are merely smaller
trucks and are exempt from many of the vehicle safety requirements
of regular passenger vehicles. They are also exempt from many
of the fuel effeciency requirements of regular passenger vehicles
too.

The US Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) yesterday finally released its long overdue
2005 fuel economy report ranking Ford cars, trucks and SUVs as
having the lowest gas mileage of any automaker in America while
General Motors, Honda and Toyota all posted slight gains in fuel

costs of the automobile-ification of America (now conservatively
estimated at more than $450,000 to $500,000 or more over a lifetime
for merely average automible ownership and operation --
much more for "luxury" pollution unit models).
Let
your automobile manufacturer know how you feel about high fossil
fuel emission vehicles polluting the air you and your family
breathe.

Ford Motors Company, et al., one of the most successful high-end
SUV pollution unit sellers know how you feel about its high-octane
efforts to dilute government regulations pertaining to automobile
fuel emmission standards. You may want to ask how it is that
auto manufactuers can rake in tens of thousands of dollars per
pollution unit in profits and straight-facedly work to weaken
clean air standards, claiming excessive costs would need to be

Do you really want a less pollutable, harder to park vehicular
behemouth?
Why what
you and what others drive may really matter - especially if you
have respiratory or lung disease or hope to avoid it:
You may have
heard about the study done recently on bridge toll takers. The
sperm of male bridge toll takes who are subject to high concentrations
of automobile exhaust was less motile (more lethargic) than was
the sperm of a control group of males. The effects of auto polluted
air is pretty well documented and understood by the responsible
scientific community.
If you drive in congested urban or commute traffic, and unless
you can shut out exterior air from being drawn into your vehicle
by recycling interior air (crack a window anyway to avoid the
possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning), you may be concentrating
polluted road air inside your vehicle. This is especially possible
when the air conditioner, the air fan, or heater are operating
in vehicles not equiped with an exterior air excluder or interior
air recycling switch. Consider the recycle-interior-air switch
option if it's available when buying new vehicles, especially
if lung or respiratory health is a concern to your or your family.
And, make sure that your auto maker knows that you want cleaner
air vehicles for a cleaner air future.
